Rev. Dr. Jim Freeman
Jim Freeman was called as pastor of Broadmoor in 2011. A third-generation minister, he received his BA in communications and political science from Trinity University in 1983. After working as a youth director/church secretary followed by a stint with USAA Insurance, Jim attended Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, where he earned his master of divinity degree in 1990. He was ordained by the Presbytery of Arkansas at Central Presbyterian Church, Pine Bluff, Arkansas later that year. Jim has served congregations in various capacities in Scotland, Arkansas, and Louisiana. During a sabbatical in 2002 Jim attended Yale University's summer writing program in playwriting. His play, "Sanctuary (Psalm 84)" has been performed in congregations in seven states. In 2015 Jim received his doctor of ministry degree in gospel and culture from Columbia Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. Jim is the father to two grown children, Lindsay and William.
Director of Christian Education
Born and raised in Shreveport, Barbara Callaway received a B.S. Degree in Secondary Education from Louisiana Tech. After four years of teaching math to students in Lincoln, Caddo, and East Baton Rouge Parishes, she joined the staff at Broadmoor. She completed her Christian Education Certification classes at Austin Theological Seminary in Austin, Texas. Barbara and her husband Steve enjoy spending time with their family which includes four daughters and four grandchildren.
Dr. Rick D. Rowell
Rick Rowell has served as Music Director at Broadmoor since 1998. He directs the Chancel Choir and contributes to the planning of weekly services. A native of Illinois, Rick attended Wheaton College, Illinois State University, and the University of Iowa. In 1983 he earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Arizona. He has been consistently involved in music ministry since 1979, directing choirs in Illinois, Nebraska, Arizona, and Louisiana. Rick also serves as Principal Trumpet with the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, a post he has held since 1983. He also performs with the I-49 Brass. In addition to musical endeavors, he can often be found in the middle of a home remodeling project.
Jean P. Rowell
Jean Rowell has served as Organist at Broadmoor since 1997. She began studying the piano at the age of 10. In her high school years, she accompanied the youth choir at Highland Baptist Church of Shreveport and began studying the organ. At the age of 20 she was employed as organist at Kings Highway Christian Church. Jean holds a Bachelor's Degree in Church Music from Centenary College where she studied with William Teague. In addition to her duties at the keyboard, she directs the JuBELLee handbell choir and maintains a teaching studio. She regularly appears as accompanist for several church and school choirs, and is often heard at weddings and funerals throughout the area. A grandmother of eight, she enjoys cross stitch and home remodeling projects with her husband, Rick.
Sharon was born and raised in Massachusetts where she was employed in the banking industry for fifteen years. She moved with her family to Shreveport in 1990. A mother of three and grandmother of five she enjoys painting, reading, knitting and crocheting.
W.C. "Ricky" Sumlin, Jr
Ricky has worked at Broadmoor since 1998. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Shreveport in 1976 and attended Draughon Business College where he graduated with an Associate Studies Degree in Computer & Accounting in 1982. Ricky served in the United States Army with the rank of sergeant for 12 years. He had been married to his wife, Rose, for 37 years. They have four children and three grandchildren. Ricky’s hobbies include fishing.
